Snow...Lots Of It

It snowed a lot this weekend, a real south dakota type blizzard. When you think of Alaska, you probably think of lots of snow all the time, but the truth is all of you reading this (with the exception of our few friends in texas) get a lot more snow than we do. I've never seen more than 4 inches in one snow fall, but sunday/monday we got 16! 16 inches of snow and wind (which we also never have).  It was Scott's day off and he planned on sleeping/cuddling with Jeep all morning, however he had to rescue me when I got stuck in the driveway and then spend the morning plowing our driveway and both our neighbors. (I guess he is nice sometimes :)

Shoveling The Roof!
Our satellite was buried, and I thought I might not get to watch American Idol.  Once again Scott to the rescue!

It's a Bou!

Yesterday I was drinking coffee and quilting with older women; meanwhile, Scottie went on an adventure.
I thought he and Cole were out for a drive. I knew they took their guns, but we're in Alaska and that's just what you do. Plus, he did say they might shoot a ptarmigan if they saw one... (that's just a dumb bird, see below). Needless to say, I was not expecting any excitement in may day.

After I had my fair share of fun quilting, I called Scott. He didn't answer his phone for 7 hours and I almost sent out the search parties. Finally he called and said they drove further than expected and he didn't have cell reception. Also, he instructed me he would be home in 45 minutes and to fix him some dinner (not even a please, and certainly no mention of dead animals).

Another 45 min and he rolls up and comes inside with bloody boots and a sweaty head. "Come see what i brought you!"...
The proud killers

It's a bou!
Shot February 19th at 3 pm
250 pounds (give or take a few)

So the story goes... they were driving down the road when they saw a bunch of caribou crossing the road right ahead of them. Scott pulled the truck over an cole got out and shot one, thats it. Real tough boys, I could have done that (I am a certified Alaska hunter).
It's not huge as far as caribou go (If I had the gun I definitely would have shot a bigger one), but thats what you get for practically shooting it out of your truck. I guess they did have to drag it through knee deep snow straight up a hill, so supposedly they did do a little work.  Now Scott needs to quit shooting animals or we need to get a bigger freezer and probably have 10 kids to eat all the meat.

Ooops

OOPS -I guess the pictures from the previous post didn't show up, and now that newspaper article is long gone...
If you haven't noticed this blog is mainly a list of excuses....excuses for me to start writing and then excuses for why I didn't follow through.
This weeks excuse is I cleaned the spare bedroom, now its much more inspirational for blogging because I don't end up thinking about all the cleaning I should be doing. Also Scott is watching a really boring movie and we only have one TV. So there's my excuse to once again start blogging. Feel free to make bets on how long it lasts!

New News: Scott shot a moose...It was cold and the camera didn't work and blah blah blah so we don't have any pictures :(  Unless you want to see their insides....they have a lot of insides, they have a lot of meat, and they make a big mess in your kitchen. However they taste all right so come on over the weeks menu is: moose tacos, moose stroganoff, moose pot roast, moose on a bun...haha

Miss you all so much!

Thought you all might like some winter in AK pics. I wish I took them, but it's too cold for me to stand out there. However, they're all from right around where we live and sights we see often. Come to AK, you'll love it and we miss you all!

Here's the newspaper article that accompanied the pics.....

When Warren Gammel needs to unwind, he grabs his camera and takes a drive. His most recent journey was a 14-hour epic trip down the Parks Highway in sub-zero temperatures on Jan. 14.

“The frigid weather certainly creates excellent photography conditions, making trips this time of year challenging and memorable,” he said via e-mail. “I was itching to take a nice drive out of town. ... (I) was off work for a few days and a spur of the moment decision turned into a 14-hour 400-mile drive.”

Gammel, a registered nurse at Denali Center (Thats where I work!), left about 9 a.m. in hopes of catching the sunrise at Mount McKinley. His primary destination was the abandoned Igloo Hotel southwest of Cantwell, about 175 miles from Fairbanks. It is the closest point to Fairbanks on the Parks Highway that offers good views of Mount McKinley.

“Conditions for unobstructed views of Mount McKinley were perfect,” he explained, with an exceptionally high pressure mass of frigid arctic air over central Interior Alaska creating clear conditions.

“The weathermen often say that Mount McKinley creates its own weather. I believe it. There was not a cloud to be seen anywhere else for miles and miles, but hovering right above McKinley was a round lenticular cloud.”

From Gammel’s position at the Igloo Hotel, which was built in the 1970s but never opened, Mount McKinley stands about 50 miles away.

“All I could think about was Lonnie Dupre from Minnesota, presently doing a January solo ascent to the top,” Gammel wrote. “I was freezing while taking these photos.”

Gammel tried to imagine the cold endured by Dupre. “They say that 180-degree below wind-chill temperatures are not uncommon. Is he crazy?” he asked.

Gammel also turned his camera to other sights along the Parks, capturing some of the unusual conditions brought on by cold, such as ice fog and spectacular lighting effects. Gammel shoots with a Canon 7D and a 18-200mm lens.

Gammel returned to Fairbanks about 1 a.m. discovering the aurora in full swing, which, naturally, he also photographed.

“The long drive was worth it,” he said. “It was extremely cold, but incredibly beautiful.”

Ok Here's a real picture scott took today when he was out hunting....Yep its a cold one out there, but you should still come....

One time this summer....

Still cold...still icy.... still snowy.... and still winter here. But one time this summer Molly's butt itched.
Haha - Meet Molly Moose... Not only does she itch her butt on my pole,  she also ate my garden down to stubs...

Got tired and took a nap....

And then came back for dessert.

You can't shoot females during Moose season, but you can bet if Molly invites any dudes over...we'll be eating well this winter :)
